Planning : Magazine Logo

The task given to us was to design a logo for the Magazine we have to make.

I wanted my Magazine, MEH (Music Entertainment Hub) to have a casual layout.

I started out by going onto http://www.dafont.com/  and trying to find a suitable font to use for the logo. I decided to use the Foreign look ; Mexican and decided to use A Papa.

After deciding the font, I went decided to make a font to go with my magazine. First I went onto http://www.designmantic.com/  and designed a few logos.

Later it came to my attention that these logos were to be bought , so i then decided to go into http://logomakr.com/ and made the logo.

After the logo was made, I combined it with the font and the final product was created.

After making the logo, I decided to try out new fonts and images as i wanted it to stand out more.
i downloaded the font ELEPHANT from the Destroy category under the heading of 'Fancy' from http://www.dafont.com/

I decided to use the whole name of the magazine rather than just the acronym. Using Adobe Illustrator I generated the new logo.

I decided not to use any image to represent the magazine as I do not want all the attention to go to the image. So instead, I used pen tool and paint tool and colored the background of each individual letter purple.

I think this logo gives a laid back yet formal look and hence maybe appealing to the targeted audience i.e: teenagers and young adults.

Research : Subscription Cards

The publishing industry calls these things "blow-in" cards, and they've been around for years as a way to attract new subscribers.A loose insert card will sell the features of a subscription (but not the main benefits).

 Here are some typical features:
  • Is the magazine cheaper than newsstand prices?
  • Is there a free booklet, report or other free gift?
  • Are copies delivered to your door at no extra charge?
  • Will the subscriber never miss an issue?
  • Has the price has been massaged down to ‘just 42 pence a week’?
  • Can the subscriber pay later?
Things to consider :
  • What will your publication DO for the reader? Make a list.
  • Why does he or she need a full year’s subscription? Why won’t a single issue be enough?
  • What benefit will the reader miss out on if he / she doesn’t subscribe? How will it affect his life?
  • What benefit will the reader receive if he / she subscribes now, rather than later?

Research : Survey Results

After distributing the survey, the following results were found.

Total number of respondents : 40

This shows that majority males answered a music survey but a considerable amount of girls  have also answered it so it can be generalized to both genders.

As my main target audience is between the ages of around 13-25 years, the respondents mainly fall into these age groups which is convenient for my research.

One of the main issues I was facing was what genre my magazine should be, as most people went with either Rock, Indie and Pop ; I will base my magazine design on these genres or even try to incorporate them into one.

This specific part of the survey indicates that people usually tend to not read magazines as 40% have said they do not read magazines at ll. I want to change that with the help of my magazine and try to attract more people who fall into the same age group as my target audience to read magazines.

A website for the magazine can prove to be quiet beneficial as the age group of my target audience tend to spend most of their time online. By having a website, it is possible for the magazine to more popular and easier to access for the target audience, or anyone else in general.

A price can be determined on the basis of this question and subsequently the number of pages will be according to the price ( so around 20-25 pages)

Once again it is seen that my target audience spend most of their time on the internet or their phones.
A segment could be added to the magazine about an app, ways to discover new music and an online feature would also increase the interests of the target audience to  purchase the magazine

Adding features such as ' Free CD inside' or 'Free Posters' can spark up the interests of bout 88%  of the audience and sell the magazine

For the open ended questions, i will keep in ind all these points that have to be considered to include in the magazine.

According to the research I have determined my target audience to be classified as the following;
In terms of Age I think my target audience will comprise of mainly teenagers and young adults starting from the age of , lets say 14 to late 20s.
It will appeal to both Genders : male and female.
Geographically as it will feature news of Pakistani bands and artists mainly focusing on Lahore, it will appeal to locals as well as other cities in Pakistan.

Research : Survey

I have prepared a basic survey to get a brief idea of what my magazine should contain.
It is an online survey that contains both open ended as well as close ended questions.

I will also be conducting semi/ unstructured interviews to get an idea of people's opinion.

Research : Target Audience

A target audience is the intended audience or readership of a publication, advertisement, or other message. In marketing and advertising, it is a specific group of people within the target market at which a product or the marketing message of a product is aimed.

A geographic target market can be consumers in a city, state, or country.
A demographic or socioeconomic target market would focus on a specific gender, age group, income level, or education level.
psychographic target market would be a market that has similar attitudes, values, or lifestyle.
The behavioral target market focuses on occasions and degree of loyalty.
Product-related segmentation describes a target approach for customers who already own a specific product.

Determining a target market approach to sales has many benefits. It can create a more specific marketing campaign, increase sales, and decrease the number of competitors in the market.

Demographic Segmentation:
Demographic segmentation means identifying markets based on several shared traits, including age, race, gender, marital status, income, education and occupation.
Thus, the phrase "a demographic" refers to a market segment with common traits.

Psychographic segmentation:
Psychographic segmentation is dividing your market based upon consumer personality traits, values, attitudes, interests, and lifestyles. Segmentation will allow you to better develop and market your products because there will be a more precise match between the product and each segment's needs and wants.

Research : Primary Research Methods

In order to find out my target audience and what they would be interested in to find in a magazine and actually want to buy it; I need to conduct some primary research.

Primary Research: Primary research is new research, carried out to answer specific issues or questions.
It can involve questionnaires, surveys or interviews with individuals or small groups.

Questionnaire: a set of printed or written questions with a choice of answers, devised for the purposes of a survey or statistical study.

Survey: a general view, examination, or description of someone or something.

Interview: Interviewing involves asking questions and getting answers from participants in a study.  Interviewing has a variety of forms including: individual, face-to-face interviews and face-to-face group interviewing.  The asking and answering of questions can be mediated by the telephone or other electronic devices (e.g. computers).
Interviews can be structured, semi-structure or unstructured.

I plan on conducting a survey and a semi-structured and unstructured interview to get a general idea what people like.

Research : Main Magazine Genre

Why Music?

I chose the genre of music because I believe that aside from it being an interest to everyone worldwide, Pakistan does not have any exclusive music magazines.

There are alot of small pakistani bands that are not recognized and even tho they have great potential and amazing music, they tend to disband.

By making a music centered magazine I want to give people , especially the target audience awareness of these bands, upcoming gigs and concerts and so on.

The band for my main story will either be a Rock or an Indie Band.
I shall carry out a survey to determine what sub-genre to go with in accordance of what my target audience would prefer.
